“It has been the best decision for us.”

Pam and Peter lived in Christchurch for 47 years, but the challenges of recent years led them to make a life-changing decision to move to Warkworth. Pam reflects, “First, it was the earthquakes in 2011, and then Covid made us feel isolated and vulnerable, especially with our children living in Auckland. During the Covid lockdown, as we began decluttering our house, we decided it was time to move to Warkworth—a place we have always loved.”

Warkworth Oaks apartments have spacious living areas with plenty of natural light.

Like many others, Pam and Peter wanted to make the move while they were still young and fit, rather than waiting until their large house and garden became an overwhelming burden. Initially, a retirement village wasn’t on their radar. “We’re far too young for a retirement village,” Peter remembers thinking back then. But everything changed when fate brought them to Warkworth Oaks.

“When we first visited Warkworth Oaks, I was struck by the modern feel of it. The entrance was so welcoming—it immediately reminded us of a hotel lobby or elegant apartments. It was nothing like the other retirement villages we had visited,” Pam says.

Peter, with his love of books, enjoys spending time in one of his favorite spots—the library at Warkworth Oaks.

Opened in 2018, Warkworth Oaks offers the perfect blend of old-world charm and contemporary living. The apartments are equipped with modern amenities and ideally situated in the heart of picturesque Warkworth, nestled beside the historic Warkworth Hotel and surrounded by majestic oak trees. Pam and Peter particularly value the convenience of having the complex located in the middle of the village, allowing them to walk to shops, restaurants, pharmacies, and doctors.

The charming restaurants and boutique shops of Warkworth, just a short stroll from Warkworth Oaks, add to the convenience and vibrant lifestyle of village living.

They also appreciate the "lock-and-leave" convenience of their apartment, which perfectly complements their independent lifestyle. While they enjoy mingling with other residents and participating in social events, they make it a priority to maintain an active life beyond the village.

Peter shares, “They take great care of us here. The staff organizes wonderful events, and we’ve made lots of friends.” Pam adds, “But for us, it’s equally important to stay connected with activities and friends outside the village. We spend time with our grandchildren, volunteer with various organizations, stay involved in our church, and lead a very rich life outside.”

Pam and Peter have always led busy and fulfilling lives, filled with meaningful work and diverse interests. Pam, a naturally social person, spent her professional life as a district nurse, building deep connections with her community. Peter, after a successful career in advertising, embarked on a new chapter at the age of seventy-one when he was ordained as a deacon of the Anglican Church.

Their active and creative spirits continue to thrive now that they have more free time to pursue their interests. Recently, Pam’s passion for quilting earned her an invitation to exhibit one of her creations at the prestigious Art Show held at Pakuranga Park Village. The event, which showcased a variety of artistic talents, attracted over 700 visitors in just three days.

Pam and Peter’s families are thrilled with their decision to move to Warkworth Oaks, and so are they. “We have never regretted it and couldn’t be happier,” Peter says.

By choosing to move while still young, Pam and Peter have embraced a fulfilling lifestyle at Warkworth Oaks—one that combines safety and convenience with the joy of community and the freedom to pursue their passions.
