A Taste of High Tea Elegance

We all know that food is much more than just eating—it's about connection, culture, and nourishment for both body and soul. It brings people together and creates lasting memories. In our Real Living villages, we recognize the importance of this, and that’s why our community life is so focused on shared meals, traditions, and celebrating special moments.

In August, Remuera Gardens hosted two delightful Oxford High Teas (on Tuesday, August 13th, and Tuesday, August 27th) in the charming Oxford Dining Room at Beattie Lodge. The theme for these events was the ‘Art Deco’ period of the 1920s, showcased through simple yet elegant table decorations. Guests were greeted with a glass of bubbles upon arrival, and delicate canapés were served once they were seated.

High tea, also known as "afternoon tea," originated in the 19th century as a substantial meal for the working class, featuring tea, bread, butter, cold cuts, pies, and cakes. Today, it is celebrated as a refined and leisurely social experience, often highlighted on hotel menus for marking significant events.

The beauty of residing in a Real Living Village is that you don’t need a special occasion to enjoy high tea. August provided the perfect opportunity to celebrate not just one, but two delightful high tea events at the village. As always, the food quality was exceptional, reflecting a restaurant-level standard thanks to our talented chefs. The menu included: Asparagus Rolls, Cucumber Sandwiches, Ham & Egg Sandwiches, Mince Savouries, sausage rolls, mini quiches, Chorizo, cheese & tomato kebabs, mini croissants, scones, carrot cake balls, chocolate mousse, fudge, and lamingtons.

The High Tea also offered a choice of English Breakfast or Earl Grey tea, served upon request for those who wished to partake.

While the delicious fare and elegant setting were truly exceptional, it was the camaraderie that made these high tea events truly special. Residents relished not only the exquisite food but also the opportunity to connect with one another in such a warm and inviting atmosphere. These gatherings reaffirmed the strong sense of community in our village, proving once again that the connections we build are as important as the meals we share.
